We had a great time celebrating International Archaeology Day at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts ‘Dig It!‘ teaching gallery! University of Richmond students created hands-on activities to teach concepts such as stratigraphy, seriation, and context. And Peter Stone (Virginia Commonwealth University) brought ancient Hellenistic and Roman pottery fragments for sorting and analyzing. Thanks to the VMFA and UR’s Bonner Center for Civic Engagement for supporting this event, and thanks to everyone who participated!

Join us at the VMFA’s Art Education Center on Sunday, October 1 from 1-4 pm to celebrate International Archaeology Day and explore the new ‘Dig It!’ teaching gallery. Hands-on activities for kids and families will include sorting real fragments of ancient pottery from Israel (with Dr. Peter Stone, VCU History) and learning about stratigraphy and seriation with UR archaeology students. The event is free and open to the public.
